Electroforming is a technique of forming metal objects by electricaly deposting the metal over a mold. The mold, which may be made of a material such as wax, epoxy resin, or silicone rubber, is later removed, leaving a metal shell.

The process of electroforming orginated in the 1830’s with the birth of electroplating. It became a convenient and extremely accurate way for museums to reproduce antique pieces. Originally, gold electroforming requires a very high karat gold – at least 23.5 K. But in the early 1980’s, a French jewelry manufacturer developed a way of making electroformed pieces out of 14K and 18K gold. Since then, electroformed jewelry has become increasingly popular.

Low Wax Casting is an ancient way of jewelry making but still popular today. It’s best for a cast piece to be made from an orignal model. Detail is lost whenever a piece is recopied. Considering how candid jewelers and chain importers are about the limitations of these chains, one may wonder why they’re so popular. It’s because their lower prices and bigger look have high sales appeal. And some of the stores promoting them are not fully aware of their low durability.

Jewelry has always been valued in the Middle East as an attractive personal possession, a status symbol and as a means of financial investment. The materials and techniques employed reflect the economic and social divisions of society. The precious metals of gold and silver have normally been restricted to court and wealthy merchant circles, though people of restricted means did and still do save to invest in family Jewelry. Among other metals the use of bronze was widespread. The most sophisticated decorative techniques concentrate on gold and silver: engraving, reposes work, granulation and filigree; Decoration of bronze, brass and other base metals is usually confined to motifs worked into the original mould. Other techniques for embellishing jewelry include the application or inlaying of other metals to the base, the use of colored enamels, either as mosaics or as finely painted designs, and the setting of precious and semi-precious stones into metal mounts, notably diamonds, rubies, emeralds, pearls, turquoises and carnelians.
